Normally on a Thursday I would upload the galleries, then make a quick blog post however I thought this week I would do something different, and take some time to blog whilst I am doing the update.
Normally I would receive the galleries a couple of days before they are due to go up, two zip files - normally I would open them straight away and see what we have for this week, however some weeks (as was the case this week) I don’t have time to check “non urgent” email.
So today I will start by download the zips and seeing what we have - I download them to my desktop (which I have a really bad habit of using as my temporary storage for everything, so it can get pretty cluttered!) and just unzip them into the two folders. For anyone that cares I use WinRar, it is free and better than WinZip.
I then look through the images just to enjoy them and also to make sure they all open and nothing has been corrupted (touch wood they never have before!) - I will sometimes nab some to file away to use as wallpapers.
I can confirm that today’s updates are fantastic, both lovely sets with beautiful models in them.
Next I have to do some re-naming to allow my script to know which files are thumbnails and which are full sized images - I have developed a small script that will do this for me, so I simple hit a few buttons and give it a couple of seconds to do its job!
Once it has renamed the files I set them up to be uploaded into the members area, this can take a couple of minutes and as it is doing this now I will take some time out to encourage any webmasters reading this to keep evaluating how you perform your updates - for the last two years now every so often I will look at my process and refine it - taking a few hours to write some script that will save you a couple of minutes an update can soon be saving you a lot of time!
I am sure a lot of people update by hand still, uploading the files and manually making each page - this is how I used to do things and it would maybe take 30 minutes per update, which isn’t exactly a lot of work, but my method now takes around 10 minutes from start to finish - that free 20 minutes can be a real life saver when you are buried in emails or have limited net time!
Right, the uploads are nearly done so I need to get back to work! Now I have to choose the eight images to go in the updates section, 6 thumbnails and 2 large images - I will always pick the two large images from near the start of the set, then the other two will be either images I have particularly liked, or images that I think tell the story of the scene well! I set these uploading then open up the updates page for editing.
I have considered writing a script that will automatically add the updated images to the updates page and change the date to whatever date it is when I upload, but every time I start to think about it I find a reason why it is ultimately a bad idea!
I do most of my web work in Macromedia Dreamweaver - a long time ago I decided it was the way forward and bought a copy, and it has paid for itself many times over, the time saving features and general ease of use are, in my opinion, unmatched. So I fire it up and open the updates page, I also open a general variable page where I keep the total number of images on the site up to date.
ST was very forward thinking when he decided on the naming convention for the images, some people may think that just numbering them is a little robotic, but it means that at a quick glance you can see how many images there are and also it means someone can email us saying I really like picture number st#### and it will make sense!
Well that is it, both those files have been uploaded, now it is time for me to check both galleries have went online OK and that the updates page has updated itself correctly, and once this is done my work is done with regards to getting the updates up!
Then I will spend some time checking emails, comments on the blog and just generally making sure everything is hunky dory in SimplyTied land!
